Charlie Coyle recently underwent surgery to repair multiple knee injuries
Bruins forward Charlie Coyle recently underwent surgery to repair multiple injuries in his left knee, his agents Bob Norton and Glen Giovanucci revealed to The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa.
Coyle’s surgery was to repair an “avulsion fracture” in his left kneecap and a small tear in his patellar tendon. He’s expected to be ready for Bruins training camp in September.
It’s unclear when Coyle suffered the injuries to his left knee, but he presumably played through them for a portion of the 2020-21 season. The 28-year-old struggled offensively, with just six points and 10 assists in 51 games, and added only three points in 11 playoff contests.
Coyle’s typically strong possession game also took a dip in the 2020-21 season. He posted CorsiFor rate of just 49 percent at 5-on-5 in the regular season, easily the lowest mark of any Bruin to play at least 50 games. His offensive zone starts dropped to 48.5 percent, the second-lowest rate of his career.
The hope, now, is that Coyle arrives in September at 100 percent and ready to reestablish himself in the Bruins’ forward hierarchy. He could also have an opportunity to earn the No. 2 center job, if David Krejci doesn’t return.
