The New England Patriots added another kicker to their group Saturday with the signing of kicker Roberto Aguayo to their practice squad. Word of Aguayo’s signing was first reported by ESPN’s Field Yates, and confirmed by the Patriots late Saturday afternoon.
Aguayo’s signing comes less than a week after the Patriots brought him in for a private workout.
A second-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2016, Aguayo went 22-for-31 (71 percent) in his rookie season, but hasn’t appeared in a regular season NFL game since. Aguayo actually lost his job to current Patriots kicker Nick Folk during the 2017 preseason, and has bounced around the Bears, Panthers, and Chargers in either practice squad or preseason roles since then.
So, to say this is a project feels like an understatement.
And what’s interesting about this move is that the Patriots haven’t had issues at the kicker position this year. The veteran Folk, who is a free agent at the end of the year, has made 25 straight kicks and is 25-for-27 on the year. Folk also shot down talk of retirement earlier this week, saying that he is interested in playing beyond this season.
The Patriots already have a kicker on their practice squad roster, too, in Justin Rohrwasser, who was a fifth-round pick of the Patriots (No. 159 overall) in the 2020 NFL Draft.
The Patriots, who were eliminated from postseason contention with last week’s loss to the Miami Dolphins, will conclude their 2020 season with home tilts against the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets.
