It Took Until Thursday But We Finally Have An Eagles Player Guaranteeing A Win
Every now and then, there’s a player guaranteeing a win against the Patriots. It doesn’t usually turn out well for that player or his team. And it rarely happens before the Super Bowl.
But despite having a tough matchup on his plate, Eagles wide receiver Alshon Jeffery went there.
It took until Thursday’s media availability for an Eagles player to guarantee a win in Super Bowl LII, but Jeffery made a personal guarantee that the Eagles would win. He will likely be part of one of the game’s key matchups if and when he lines up against Patriots cornerback (and his former college roommate) Stephon Gilmore.
But when it comes to the actual game, don’t tell Jeffery about “ifs”.
“Ain’t no ‘if,’ man,” said Jeffery, via the News Journal in Delaware. “When we win on Sunday, ain’t no telling what we’re going to do. But we’re probably going to celebrate, have some fun.”
Asked if he’s convinced the Eagles will win, Jeffery said, “We’re bringing that trophy back to Philly.”
The Next Freddie Mitchell?
Jeffery’s comments echo the infamous Freddie Mitchell, who also played for the Eagles, back in Super Bowl XXXIX. He said “I got something for you, Harrison,” referring to Rodney Harrison. Mitchell made one catch for 11 yards on four targets in the game, which the Patriots won 24-21.
Confidence is fine. It’s not like Jeffery’s going to guarantee a loss. But he certainly didn’t need to be that confident about it.
So now, there’s another Eagles player who needs to back up his brash talk in the Super Bowl. If Jeffery can’t make plays and the Eagles lose, it would be an all-time egg-on-the-face moment. We shall see.
