There was plenty of talk about Bill O’Brien in the days and weeks leading up to the Patriots officially hiring him as their offensive coordinator on Thursday. On Friday, O’Brien spoke for the first time since the hire, on a video posted to the Patriots’ team Twitter account.

For most of the video, O’Brien reflects on what led to him accepting the job in New England. The full clip can be seen below.

  • “Having worked here before, having grown up here – just a great opportunity for my family,” O’Brien began. “Very excited.”

“I’ve had a lot of different experiences, but at the end of the day the opportunity to come back here presented itself and it was something I couldn’t pass up,” he continued. “So maybe I can bring some of those experiences to the table here and help our football team.”

He also spoke briefly about his relationship with Bill Belichick. “I’m looking forward to getting back and working with Bill and working for Bill and doing what’s best for the team,” O’Brien closed with. “That’s what this place is all about.”

O’Brien’s first assignment with the Patriots is taking part in the Shrine Bowl – a draft prospect showcase game – this week in Las Vegas. The first practice of the week will be on Saturday.
