  • Saturday is ‘fine day’ in the NFL. Prior to the week’s main slate, the league announces which players were fined for which infractions the week before.

For the Patriots, the game in focus this week was their Thursday Night Football loss to the Bills in Week 13. There ended up being two fines in that game, one on a player on each team.

  • One of those fines was somewhat expected. Bills safety Damar Hamlin was docked $4,806 for an end zone hit on Patriots wide receiver Jakobi Meyers. That hit, which occurred late in the game, resulted in Meyers being put into concussion protocol. Meyers has been ruled out for this week’s Patriots game against the Cardinals on Monday night.

The other fine came as somewhat of a surprise. Quarterback Mac Jones had to pay $10,609 for a moment where he was caught “flicked the ball and hit [Bills defensive end] A.J. Epenesa after a sack,” as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport described it. No flag was thrown on the play, which also happened late in the game, at the time. Some didn’t even notice the moment until the fine was reported Saturday afternoon.

  • Was Jones’ infraction worth more than twice as much of a fine as Hamlin’s hit? The NFL seems to think so.

It’s not as though Jones is a repeat offender either. This was his first career fine. There was discussion of a possible fine after he rolled up on Panthers defensive end Brian Burns last year, but in the end no penalty was levied for that play.

Jones’ fine is the second against the Patriots this season. Defensive tackle Daniel Ekuale was also fined $107,222.22 and suspended two games at the start of the season. The reason for those penalties was not disclosed.
