Zolak & Bertrand

On Thursday’s edition of Zolak & Bertrand, Ted Johnson made it clear that he thinks Jakobi Meyers is already gone.

  • They don't pay these kind of guys...

Ted Johnson: My guess is they see $12 million as a high number for a guy (Jakobi Meyers) who was undrafted. It’s the mentality over there.

Scott Zolak: But you said go pay Lamar (Jackson) so if the guy’s proven himself and it’s against good competition and he knows your system and he even fought to be your best receiver this year with a bad guy calling the plays…

    Ted Johnson: He’s worth it.

Scott Zolak: He’s worth it then. They’ve already devauled the quarterback position by not paying (Tom) Brady.

Ted Johnson: But you have to remember with the Patriots, when was he drafted?

Scott Zolak: Oh, what, three, four years ago?

Ted Johnson: Where was he drafted?

Scott Zolak: He wasn’t. He’s a former quarterback at NC State.

Ted Johnson: He was an undrafted free agent. They do not pay. Patriots do not pay…

Scott Zolak: This is what they did with (Julian) Edelman. This is where it’s heading.

Ted Johnson: They don’t they don’t pay those guys.

Scott Zolak: They ain’t pay Malcolm (Butler). That’s a good point. Undrafted free agents, those guys come here, they get you to play and then you go elsewhere.

Ted Johnson: I’ll give you a better comp. Late round draft picks. The Patriots don’t like to pay late round draft picks that far exceed their expectations. Can you think of a guy? Tom Brady. So they’re not going to pay an undrafted guy market value or you know even average what market value is, so he’s not coming back here.

Meyers continues to be the Patriots’ most consistently dependable target. He finished the day with a team-high six catches and 59 receiving yards. That won’t be nearly enough to outscore a team like the Bills, particularly when Josh Allen is cooking like he was for most of the game. That’s not Meyers’ fault, though. You can give him credit for showing up.
