Felger & Mazz

Felger & Mazz

The Stanley Cup Playoffs are getting closer for the Boston Bruins and they have gotten great goaltending from both Linus Ullmark and Jeremy Swayman. On Mondayโ€™s Felger and Mazz, Felger wondered if there was a possibility the team would use both Ullmark and Swayman during their playoff run.

  • A goalie platoon? In the playoffs?

Felger: So hereโ€™s what hereโ€™s my developing opinion, itโ€™s really Iโ€™m starting to consider it, and I never thought I would, and itโ€™s beneath me, frankly.

    Mazz: โ€œDeveloping considerationโ€.

Felger: A developing considerationโ€ฆis keeping the platoon going in the playoffs. You know, every year we would get that call. Every year. Tuukka Rask and Jaroslav Halak had a couple of good years when he was the backup, remember? And there was a couple of years where there was like, now Iโ€™m forgetting who the backups were.

    Mazz: Khudobin.

Felger: Khudobin was another one. Yes, there were a couple of years where Rask and Anton Khudobin, Rask and Halak, and there might even have been another one in there somewhere, where they were both pretty good. And it had gotten to a point where we had this track record on Tuukka Rask where we didnโ€™t trust him, he would wear down with too much work and so, โ€œhey, why not just platoon him in the playoffs like you platoon them in the regular season?โ€, and every time a caller would suggest that we jump down their throats because you donโ€™t do that in the postseason, you dummy, thatโ€™s not how itโ€™s done. In the postseason you donโ€™t platoon goalies, you bench them. So I donโ€™t know why Iโ€™m considering it now, like Iโ€™m kind of considering it. And now itโ€™s occurred to me why Iโ€™m considering it.

    Mazz: I know why youโ€™re considering itโ€ฆ

Felger: I donโ€™t fully trust Ullmark. And Swayman, I thought, had a bad night at home against Edmonton a couple of weeks ago. I didnโ€™t like that game.

Mazz: He wasnโ€™t good in that game.

Felger: But other than that, heโ€™s been really good. And itโ€™s like I just, you know, the Stanley Cup playoffs, itโ€™s two months and four seven game series, every other night, whatever else is going on, you got to block it out, grind it out, just be singularly focused and mentally tough and physically tough and some sort of animal to do the thing. Which is what Tim Thomas was, which is what Tuukka Rask was not, sorry everybody he just wasnโ€™t. And so you sort of need that thing and I donโ€™t know. And Linus Ullmark was the goalie last year. He got benched and they finished with Swayman and it wasnโ€™t much of a difference, but I donโ€™t know, I guess Iโ€™m a little concerned about Linus Ullmark.
