The Red Sox’ busy trade deadline continued on Monday with a third trade. The team announced via Twitter that they’ve acquired catcher Reese McGuire from the Chicago White Sox.

In exchange, the Red Sox are sending reliever Jake Diekman to Chicago. Boston will receive either a player to be named later or cash considerations, along with McGuire.

The 27-year-old catcher is batting .225 with zero home runs and .546 OPS in 53 games for the White Sox so far in 2022. Despite his struggles at the plate, McGuire ranks 11th among all major-league catchers to play at least 350 innings, with 7.7 defensive runs saved above average. Diekman, meanwhile, posted a 4.23 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 38.1 innings for the Red Sox this season.

  • The McGuire-for-Diekman swap comes after the Red Sox traded catcher Christian Vazquez to the Houston Astros. They are left with McGuire and Kevin Plawecki at catcher on the major league roster. Connor Wong has also played three games at catcher for the Red Sox this season.

Boston additionally added veteran outfield help, bringing in 34-year-old left fielder Tommy Pham from the Cincinnati Reds.

All-Star designated hitter J.D. Martinez has been mentioned in trade rumors leading up to the deadline, as well. The official MLB trade deadline passes at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2.
