The New England Patriots practice in front of assembled media for the first time during 2022 off-season workouts on Monday in Foxboro. That means reporters in attendance will get their first look at the Pats’ rookie class, led by first-round pick Cole Strange and second-rounder Tyquan Thornton.
It’s also jersey number time for the rookies – sort of. The Patriots typically assign their newcomers temporary numbers, starting with 50, in the order that they were drafted. Thanks to NBC Sports Boston’s Phil Perry on
Notably, the Patriots continue to keep No. 56 and 57 off limits, even in camp. Former Pats linebacker Steve Nelson had his number 57 retired back in 1988. Andre Tippett’s number 56, meanwhile, isn’t officially retired, but no one’s worn the number since the Hall of Famer retired in 1993.
So the Patriots’ last two draft picks, offensive linemen Chasen Hines and Andrew Stueber, donned different temporary numbers. Based on all the rookies’ positions, those two are likely the only ones with a chance at keeping their current numbers. So, expect most of the numbers to change after the preseason. But it’s still good for fans to know the rookies’ current numbers, if they plan to follow the team throughout the spring and summer.
