The Patriots have been especially busy meeting with wide receivers during the pre-draft visit process. Of the 44 reported pre-draft meetings they’ve had so far, 10 have been with wideouts.

It’s now time to add another to the list. On Saturday,

Patriots hosted Stanford WR Michael Wilson on a Top 30, per source.

High-level perimeter weapon who stood out at the Senior Bowl and is the type of leader you want in your locker room for a long, long time.

  • Wilson is certainly an interesting player for the Patriots to be interested in. His play style certainly fits a need, but comes with questions as well.

At 6-foot-2, 213 pounds, Wilson projects as a downfield threat at the next level. He’s a strong route-runner who can separate on more linear routes as well, and can go up and get the ball in contested-catch situations. He also has significant special teams experience covering kicks and punts, and was voted a team captain.

However, Wilson hasn’t been able to put all those skills to use much in game action over the past three years. As a sophomore in 2019 he had a breakout year with 56 catches for 672 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games. In the three years since, he’s played a total of 14 games. A foot injury prematurely ended his 2020 season, and cost him time in 2021. Last year, his season ended after six games due to an undisclosed injury.

  • Given all that missed time, the pre-draft process will be key for Wilson. He started out on a high note, and was one of the best wideouts as the Senior Bowl this year. His Combine testing didn’t quite measure up to the athleticism he displays on tape. He ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash, with ranked 35th among wide receivers at the event. His 37.5-inch vertical ranked 14th, but he did rank seventh with a 4.27 short shuttle.

Wilson is currently projected to go late on Day 2 or early on Day 3. How teams view him will likely depend heavily on their own medical evaluations, which the Patriots could have him undergo with their doctors during his visit. If he checks all the boxes, he could be a Day 2 pick for them. Even if he doesn’t, he could be worth an investment with one of their eight Day 3 picks.
