The Patriots began the week by waiving three players. Turns out, they weren’t done reshaping the roster.

On Friday afternoon, the team announced the release of defensive lineman LaBryan Ray. Because Ray was signed to a future contract, he was outright released rather than waived.

  • Ray, 25, was signed by the Patriots as a UDFA last spring out of Alabama. Injuries throughout his time in college impacted Ray’s draft stock and are likely the reason he wasn’t selected.

After Ray had a strong summer, he appeared to be a contender to make the roster. After roster cuts though he ended up on the practice squad, then was placed on practice squad IR in October and was never activated.

The Patriots still have six defensive linemen under contract from last year in Christian Barmore, Davon Godchaux, Lawrence Guy, Deatrich Wise, Sam Roberts, and DaMarcus Mitchell. Jeremiah Pharms is also signed to a futures contract. Carl Davis and Daniel Ekuale are pending free agents.
