Training camp? Over. The preseason? Over. The only event left on the NFL calendar before the start of the regular season is now roster cuts.

Once the final week of the preseason is wrapped up, NFL teams have until Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET this week to trim their rosters from the 90 player limit down to 53. Once that deadline passes teams can continue the roster construction process, which includes playing players on IR/eligible to return as well as building their practice squads. This week is also typically the busiest time of year for trades as well.

For the New England Patriots, roster construction is now the full focus. Following the team’s preseason finale on Friday night, Bill Belichick and his staff will spend the next few days translating what they’ve seen in camp and the preseason games into the initial 53-man roster.

It’s also important to remember that the *initial* 53-man roster is just that – initial. As soon as that Tuesday 4 p.m. deadline passes the team will continue to make changes ahead of its Week 1 matchup with the Eagles. As we go through this roster projection we’ll make note of what kind of moves may be included in that period.

Note: Players are listed alphabetically by position, not as a projected depth chart. Rookies are in italics.

It wasn’t the best summer for Zappe, capped off by a near wire-to-wire three-turnover game on Friday night. Yet it wasn’t worrying to the point where the Patriots should look into bringing in another quarterback, at least on the active roster.

As for Malik Cunningham, it would have been good to see him get more reps at quarterback after the preseason opener. The fact the Patriots used him almost exclusively at wide receiver on Friday night isn’t a good sign for his roster chances. Still, he’s a very strong candidate to stick around on the practice squad.

Changes from Roster Projection 3.0: CUT Malik Cunningham.

  • Running backs (4)

    –Ezekiel Elliott
    –Rhamondre Stevenson
    –Pierre Strong
    –J.J. Taylor

Taylor played his best this summer when it really mattered, in joint practices and in games. The coaching staff will take notice of that, and it should be enough to help him sneak onto the roster. Ty Montgomery not dressing on Friday night wasn’t a good sign for his chances. As for Kevin Harris, his skillset overlaps with Elliott and Stevenson, where Taylor adds a speed/quickness element the team wouldn’t otherwise have on the roster. Harris should get to the practice squad, and could end up on the roster later in the season – as he did last year.

Changes from 3.0: ADD J.J. Taylor

  • Wide receivers (6)

    –DeVante Parker
    –JuJu Smith-Schuster
    –Tyquan Thornton

We’ve been at six wide receivers since Roster Projection 2.0, and this past week showed no reason to change that. Boutte’s lack of playing time on Friday night felt like a positive sign for his roster chances.

While this may be the initial group, that could change quickly. If Thornton’s shoulder issues is going to cost him regular season tiime, the Patriots could place him on IR – where he’d have to miss the first four weeks – once rosters become official to then open up a roster spot to add another player off the practice squad.

  • Tight ends (2)

Keeping just two tight ends initially still feels like it makes the most sense for the Patriots – especially with Gesicki returning to practice last week following a shoulder injury. Matt Sokol and Anthony Firkser will both probably contribute at some point this year, but the team should be able to get them to the practice squad first and either elevate them as needed or sign one once a player is placed on IR.

  • Offensive linemen (9)

    –‘TBD Tackle’

We already had one ‘TBD’ player on the roster projections this year, putting a ‘TBD running back’ on 2.0 before the Patriots signed Ezekiel Elliott. We’re bringing this spot back this week at tackle.

Now, there is some serious projecting going on here. Rieff’s injury on Friday night complicates this position (for more on Reiff’s injury, check out Friday night’s game takeaways here). If he’ll be ready to go for Week 1, the Patriots may be able to get by with eight offensive linemen. However if he’s going to miss time, the Patriots would be down to one primary tackle on their roster in Brown. At that point they’d almost have to add another, and with Conor McDermott not practicing for the last two weeks and Calvin Anderson still on NFI, the most logical way to do so would be via external addition.

Changes from 3.0: CUT Conor McDermott, ADD ‘TBD Tackle’

  • Defensive linemen (7)

    –Lawrence Guy
    –Sam Roberts

    –Deatrich Wise

Football is a ‘what have you done for me lately’ sport, and that’s what gets Roberts on the roster. He’s been making plays consistently since the week of joint practices in Green Bay. Friday night’s performance should offset two bad penalties he had in the second preseason game. The 2022 sixth-round pick just makes the back end of this roster with a late, but strong, showing for the coaching staff.

Changes from 2.0: ADD Sam Roberts

  • Linebackers (7)

Like Sam Roberts, Ronnie Perkins made a late push for a roster spot with a strong showing in the preseason finale. Unlike Roberts though, Perkins’ showing exists on its own – he missed the full week in Green Bay and just returned to the practice field this week. Given Roberts has a more complete body of work he gets the nod, but Perkins should be back on the practice squad and could be one of those players brought back to the 53 after IR placements are made.

This is the same group we’ve had for most of the summer. It wouldn’t be unrealistic to see one of Ameer Speed, Shaun Wade, or Isaiah Bolden make the team, but for this evaluation none of the three quite got over the hill. Again, these are players the Patriots could probably get to the practice squad and recall when needed. That being said, the team could keep Bolden then place him on IR with his concussion, quickly re-opening that roster spot.

That all being said, Jack Jones’ status coming into focus with the preseason opener a few weeks away. He told reporters this week he hasn’t heard anything from the league about a potential suspension. If one comes though, he’d be added to the exempt list and not count against the 53-man roster. In that case, one of Wade or Speed (I’d guess Wade) would very likely end up on the roster.

  • Safeties (5)

    –Kyle Dugger
    –Jalen Mills

Bledsoe played a lot with the starters in all three preseason games. That should be a strong sign that the team plans on keeping him. Besides him, this position is pretty cut-and-dry.

  • Specialists (3)

I’ve said for weeks I wouldn’t come off the possibility of the Patriots keeping two kickers until I had a reason not to. That reason came Friday night.

Part of it is how the Patriots handled their kickers – Ryland handled both kickoffs and attempted the lone PAT, while Nick Folk remained on the sideline. The bigger factor though is what happened around the league. From erratic kicking to injuries, the NFL’s kicker shortage was on full display. At this point, it should be impossible to ignore Folk’s trade value. The Patriots should be able to get a Day 3 pick for him, should they elect to move him – which they should.

That being said, if Folk isn’t traded prior to the roster cutdown there’s a good chance the team keeps him rather than releases him, either to be the second kicker or to trade him later. In his Saturday morning press conference, Bill Belichick didn’t rule out the possibility of keeping two kickers, pointing out they had two kickers on the active roster at times last year (Tristan Vizcaino was on the team for two games as a kickoff specialist, with Folk handling field goal duties).

Changes from 3.0: CUT Nick Folk

  • Special teamers (3)

    –Brenden Schooler

We had Munson on the roster last week, but he only strengthened his case on Friday night – both on special teams and playing linebacker. He should give the Patriots some added emergency depth off the ball on early downs behind Ja’Whaun Bentley, Jahlani Tavai, and Chris Board.

  • On the bubble

    Last 3 off:

  • One more note…

For those who didn’t notice, this roster projection does not have and UDFAs making the team. That would be the first time that happens for the Patriots in 19 years. Don’t rule out that streak ending this year. Malik Cunningham is right on the bubble and could continue it, but if the team isn’t going to keep him than there really isn’t another candidate to do so this year. Unless the Patriots externally add another team’s UDFA (and I don’t even know if that would count), this might be it.
