Asante Samuel has slowly transformed into a villain in New England during his post-playing career, but a current Patriot has finally tried to shut him up.

Patriots fans on Twitter may be familiar with Samuel’s harsh rhetoric against head coach Bill Belichick. The former Pats cornerback, who won two Super Bowl rings in 2003 and 2004 and was named a First Team All-Pro in 2007, has been shockingly eager and persistent in discrediting Belichick as a key figure in the Tom Brady-led dynasty.

  • That’s putting it kindly. Samuel has been a vocal critic of Belichick, particularly on Twitter, even since before Brady’s departure, when the team was still winning at a high level. Whenever Belichick makes a costly mistake, here comes Samuel to rip his hooded former coach.

But Samuel’s latest Twitter chirp was unprovoked. Out of nowhere, Samuel tried to tell Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson that he shouldn’t want to play for Belichick. As if he’s even been in those facilities in a decade.

  • And it’s not that Belichick has a perfect record in recent years. The Patriots have been mediocre in the post-Brady era. The decision to put Matt Patricia and Joe Judge in charge of the offense in 2022 ranks among the worst of his career. But at some point, with Samuel in particular, enough is enough.

Finally, Samuel wasn’t going to just get away with it. Patriots linebacker Matthew Judon, who in two years has become one of the greatest ambassadors for the program, in New England, weighed in. Basically shushed him.

  • A reply guy interpreted Judon’s tweet as an endorsement of the Patriots getting Jackson, which would effectively replace Mac Jones. He responded to that, “Nah but he ain’t gotta do all that.” Basically saying there was no need for Samuel to use this story as an opportunity to keep grinding that Belichick axe.

It’s frankly a bad look for Samuel at this point. And it can’t be healthy for him to continue holding onto this resentment. He can’t possibly have a therapist. Not a good one, anyway. A therapist would advise him to let it go.

Ostensibly, Samuel’s bitterness with the Patriots stems from Belichick coaching him hard then showing him the door as a free agent instead of paying him top dollar. He wouldn’t be the first player that Belichick angered for these reasons. But it’s been 16 years. And the guy had a lot of success under Belichick that he may not have had anywhere else. At some point, this act became pathological.

It’s about time another Patriot shot back.
