New England Patriots

  • The Patriots had just one player from the active roster not at practice on Thursday – starting quarterback Mac Jones. Although Jones has been dealing with a back injury, this absence appears to be unrelated.

Patriots media staff members told reporters just before practice that Jones wouldn’t be practicing due to an illness.

#Patriots QB Mac Jones is not practicing today due to illness.

My understanding is it's not believed to be COVID-related -- Jones just had an upset stomach so they decided to give him the day off.

  • Jones’ status has been at the forefront of the discussion this week following last week’s game in Miami, when he underwent postgame X-rays on his back and missed his postgame media availability. Jones was listed on the injury report as a full participant for the team’s first practice of the week on Wednesday.

“It feels good. Everything feels good. Just keeping it warm and throwing the football,” Jones told reporters when asked about his back after Wednesday’s practice. He added he wasn’t doing anything extra in his routine because of the injury. “Just the normal treatment plan,” he said. “I always like to work with my guy Brian [Dolan, team assistant athletic trainer/physical therapist] and he does a good job. That’s what we always do. Whatever hurts during the game, just fix it and then play the next week.

As mentioned above, Jones was the only player on the Patriots’ 53-man roster not spotted during the portion of practice open to the media. Those in attendance included linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley, who was listed as a non-participant on Wednesday with a toe injury. Three practice squad players were absent – offensive lineman Bill Murray, defensive lineman LaBryan Ray, and linebacker Cameron McGrone.
