Over the weekend, Patriots cornerback Jack Jones was arrested at Logan Airport on multiple gun charges. Jones is scheduled to be in court in East Boston this week for arraignment.

Based on the initial reporting, the charges against Jones, 25, could hold significant long-term implications not just for his football career, but his life off the field. On Sunday night, sports law expert Michael McCann joined NBC Sports Boston’s BST to break down the charges.

  • “Jones is in a lot of trouble,” McCann explained. “He’s in a lot of trouble because he’s been charged with multiple offenses and they’re serious offenses, including a large capacity feeding device which goes to rounds and ballistics and possession of a gun in an airport, loaded firearm – there’s a lot of stuff that he’s been charged with.”

“Certainly what we know so far is that he’s facing serious charges that carry, potentially, time in prison,” he continued. “I think that that’s something that has to be really worrisome for him beyond how this will affect his career with the Patriots and his eligibility to play in the NFL.”

  • “The problem here is just – the type of firearms that he allegedly brought on and the alleged fact that they were loaded. There’s all sorts of characteristics to this that make it worse than some of the other situations that NFL players have faced,” he concluded. “Now, those are serious too, but this one has some specific characteristics to it that make it more problematic than bringing on (sic) a gun into an airport.”

This is not Jones’ first legal issue. While in college in June of 2018 he was arrested at a Panda Express in Santa Paula, California for commercial burglary. he pled guilty to the charge, a second-degree misdemeanor, and ended up getting and serving 45 days of house arrest.

The Patriots drafted Jones in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of Arizona State. As a rookie, he recorded two interceptions and six pass breakups in 13 games, before being placed on IR in December. Jones was then suspended for issues with his rehab process.
