Cornerback Jonathan Jones is staying with the Patriots, and on what looks like a team-friendly deal.

According to multiple reports, Jones’ new deal with the Pats is for two years, $13 million guaranteed, and a $7.5 million signing bonus. There were conflicting reports on the total value of the deal, between $19-20 million. But everyone agrees on the aforementioned guaranteed money, and there are more details tied to bonuses and incentives.

  • According to Mike Reiss and Doug Kyed, Jones will be able to earn up to $1 million in per-game roster bonuses ($58,824 per game) in each season, as well as a $500,000 incentive.

Jones will earn a base salary of $1.5 million in 2023, fully guaranteed, per Reiss. He then has an $8 million salary in 2024, $4M of which is guaranteed. So, his guaranteed money consists of his $7.5M signing bonus and $5.5M in salaries.

  • Jones originally sought to explore free agency for the possibility of a more lucrative deal. According to Mike Giardi of the NFL Network, there indeed was “a fair amount more” money out there for Jones.

But apparently, there was not enough of a pay bump to convince Jones to leave New England, where he has long-established himself as a cornerstone defender and a big presence in the community. Jones recently attended multiple public events and spoke about his desire to stay in New England, so the news that he’s re-signing is not terribly surprising.

  • It’s also not surprising that Jones worked out a deal that is solid money for him, and certainly workable for the Patriots.
