• Mac Jones was injured late in the Patriots’ 37-26 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at Gillette Stadium, but the initial reporting suggests he avoided at least one kind of major injury.

    According to

#Patriots QB Mac Jones has X-Rays on his ankle following the game and they were negative, source said. His ankle will continue to be evaluated.

    — Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 25, 2022" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Jones went for x-rays on his ankle after the game, and they came back negative. So it appears that Jones has avoided a fracture. But Rapoport added that Jones’ ankle “will continue to be evaluated.”

It can’t be ruled out that Jones still sprained his ankle, or damaged a muscle/ligament in some way. Jones hopped off the field on one leg late in the game after taking a hit from the Ravens’ Calais Campbell, and appeared to be in significant pain as he exited the field.

  • The Patriots’ PR staff told reporters after the game that Jones was still being evaluated and so he couldn’t conduct his usual postgame press conference. But the tentative plan is for Jones to be available on Monday.

There’s plenty to unpack from the game itself, including Jones’ own performance. The second-year quarterback was 22-of-32 passing for 323 yards, no touchdowns, and three interceptions, but did run for a score. If not for the injury, we’d likely be talking about his decision-making on the turnovers.

However, that matters little if Jones is dealing with a serious injury and has to miss extended time. Though Rapoport’s initial report on the x-rays is promising, we’ll still have to wait and see if he avoided a bad injury entirely.

  • UPDATE: According to

Sources: Mac Jones will have an MRI tomorrow on his injured ankle after his X-rays were negative. The concern is a potential high-ankle sprain but an MRI will diagnose the extent of the injury. If Jones has to miss time, Brian Hoyer would likely start over rookie Bailey Zappe.

    — Jeff Howe (@jeffphowe) September 25, 2022" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Jeff Howe of The Athletic, Mac Jones will have an MRI on his ankle Monday. The “concern” is a high-ankle sprain. That certainly wouldn’t be a good injury for Jones, but it at least would mean he avoided a season-ending scenario.
