  • Coming off the bye week, the Patriots opened up a spot on their practice squad on Tuesday. The team did that by releasing wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

Humphrey was a surprise standout during training camp this summer. Despite not being signed until after OTAs and Minicamp, he was the team’s leading receiver in the preseason. That performance initially earned him a practice squad spot, and after being a temporary elevation for the season opener he was added to the active roster before Week 2.

  • Humphrey ended up playing in the Patriots’ first six games of the season. His role saw him handling both wide receiver and tight end responsibilities. In total, caught two passes for 20 yards on four targets while playing 34 percent of the offensive snaps. He also saw time on special teams.

Once rookie Tyquan Thornton was activated from IR, Humphrey’s role decreased. He was waived off the active roster in Week 5 in order to open up a spot for rookie running back Kevin Harris. Humphrey was elevated once again for Week 6, but had not appeared in a game since.

  • With Humphrey gone, the Patriots still have two wide receivers on their practice squad in Tre Nixon and Lynn Bowden, who was elevated for Week 9. No corresponding move was announced, meaning the team now has an open spot on the practice squad.

That spot could potentially go to linebacker Terez Hall, who was in Foxborough on Tuesday for a free agent workout. Hall was originally signed by the Patriots as a UDFA in 2019, and spent three years in New England. He spent his rookie year exclusively on the practice squad, then appeared in eight games in 2020, making four starts. After spending the 2021 season on the PUP list, he was released this past spring after a failed physical.
