Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics just made a major shake-up with the trade of Marcus Smart for Kristaps Porzingis, but it sounds like Brad Stevens won’t stop there.

Wednesday was a roller coaster of a day for the Celtics organization, starting with the impending acquisition of Porzingis for Malcolm Brogdon as part of a three-team trade with the Wizards and Clippers. But that deal ultimately fell apart because of the Clippers’ concerns with Brogdon’s elbow injury, according to multiple reports.

The C’s might be out of luck entirely on a Brogdon trade, but a new report suggests that Stevens isn’t finished retooling his roster.

  • According to Brian Robb of MassLive, a league source says the Celtics are “far from done” making moves, with the 2023 NBA Draft approaching Thursday night. The C’s are now in the first round after acquiring the 25th overall pick as part of the Porzingis trade, so there’s that.

But according to Robb and other pre-draft reports, the C’s are still looking to make a sign-and-trade involving Grant Williams. Presumably, they and other teams would want to finalize such a deal before or during the first round of the draft on Thursday night, so that move could be imminent.

Either way, it still seems like Smart-for-Porzingis will go down as the Celtics’ biggest move of the off-season. The majority of insider reports have suggested that the Celtics are moving forward with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown atop their roster, and are looking to extend Brown with a supermax contract.

  • If and when the Celtics sign Brown to the supermax, even if they wanted to trade him, they’d have to wait a full year to do it. So, in all likelihood, Brown is here to stay for the 2023-24 season.

With Smart gone, the Celtics are still in good shape at guard, assuming Brogdon gets healthy and stays. Derrick White presumably rises to a full-time starting role, with increased minutes coming for Payton Pritchard. But Stevens would be wise to replace the defensive intensity and toughness that Smart brought to the team.

  • And even with Porzingis added to the frontcourt, the Celtics still have a group filled with injury histories (Porzingis, Robert Williams) and age concerns (Al Horford). Especially if they move on from Grant Williams, Stevens may still need to add legitimate depth pieces to his retooled stable of bigs.

B-Robb was ahead of everyone else on the Celtics trade rumors, so when he says the team isn’t done, you should believe it 100 percent. If you’re worried about how the Celtics look on Thursday morning, you’re worrying about an unfinished work. Stevens just reestablished his fearlessness as a GM, and he probably won’t be afraid to keep shaking things up.
