New report adds clarity to Joonas Korpisalo’s future with Bruins
The Boston Bruins have a new backup goaltender in Joonas Korpisalo – and it sounds like it will stay that way.
In the wake of the B’s bringing in Korpisalo as part of a deal to send former Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark to the Ottawa Senators, the next question was whether they’d actually keep Korpisalo in the fold, with his $3 million cap hit over the next four seasons (the Senators retained 25% of his $4M total hit). Buying out his contract seemed to be a real possibility.
Well, that’s reportedly not happening. A Bruins representative confirmed to Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic that “the team has no plans to buy out Korpisalo at this time.” Furthermore, they apparently won’t be spinning off Korpisalo in another trade, either; his agent told Shinzawa in an email, “Korpi will play for [Boston].”
Korpisalo went 21-26-4 in 55 appearances (49 starts) for the Senators in the 2023-24 campaign, while posting a ghastly 3.27 goals against average and .890 save percentage. And he wasn’t necessarily a product of a bad Ottawa team; according to MoneyPuck.com, Korpisalo saved -0.314 goals above expected per 60 minutes, which ranks 78th out of 98 qualifying netminders.
For the Bruins, the hope is that Korpisalo plays the best hockey of his career under the tutelage of goaltender coach Bob Essensa. Because it certainly doesn’t sound like they have a different plan in place for their backup goaltender.
After completing the Ullmark trade, the Bruins have around $24 million in cap space to work with this off-season, and a few glaring needs on the roster. But goaltender clearly isn’t one of them.
