CBS-Masters coverage is the gold standard
The best week on the golf calendar is here as the best players in the world head to Augusta National to compete in the 2024 Masters. The top golfers competing for the coveted green jacket always delivers memorable moments that create and cement legacies for years to come. For this article though, I want to focus on the coverage around the Masters.
As a die hard golf fan, one of my biggest gripes with golf is the coverage. There are numerous tournaments throughout the year where fans simply don’t get to watch enough of the sport. Thankfully, this week at the Masters, CBS has made sure that is not the case at all. This is also a special and somewhat sad year for golf fans, as legendary announcer Verne Lundquist, who has some of the most memorable calls in golf history, will be calling it a career after this year’s Masters. At least fans are lucky to hear him one last time at Augusta.
CBS has televised the Masters in the United States every year since 1956. At first, Augusta National was hesitant to allow CBS full coverage, as there were no cameras allowed on the first 8 holes of the course unti 1995, but things have changed drastically since then. Now in my opinion, the Masters.com and CBS do the best job in all of sports when showcasing their premier event.
Masters coverage:
For fans that want to watch as much golf as possible, this is a dream weekend. Given all the options to view, you will probably need more than one screen if you want to fully take advantage of all the different coverages.
The coverage starts on Wednesday with the famous par 3 contest at Augusta’s immaculate par 3 course. This is one of the more lighthearted and fun days on the golf calendar all year. Players have family, friends, and even celebrities caddy for them around the par 3 course, kicking off the tournament with some fun.
Masters.com has all the coverage from 12-5 pm on their website for free and then national TV coverage runs from 3-5 on ESPN.
Rounds 1&2 Coverage:
Rounds 1 and 2 start at 8:30 a.m. Coverage begins right at 8:30 am on Masters.com, the CBS Sports Network, and Paramount+ giving fans numerous options to watch. With so many different options to watch, featured groups, Amen corner, holes 4-6 and holes 15-16, there’s no shortage of options for fans to consume as much golf as possible. Then from 3-7 p.m ESPN has full coverage along with Masters.com.
Rounds 3&4 Coverage:
As the tournament begins to tighten, coverage stays broad and allows fans to continue to view different parts of the course at anytime to follow whichever golfer they want. CBSSports.com and the CBS Sports app will provide free coverage to go along with Masters.com covering certain holes and groups. For Saturday and Sunday, coverage will be only on CBS from 3-7 p.m. and 2-7 p.m on Sunday.
For a massive golf fan like myself, this weekend is unrivaled. Getting a chance to watch basically every inch of one of the more private golf courses in the country while it showcases itself on the biggest stage is a golf fan’s dream. I’ll be sure to soak in Verne’s final calls down the stretch on Sunday as an amazing career comes to an end in hopefully another phenonemal Masters tournament.
