Bill O’Brien Through 9 Games
The Patriots are 2-7 through 9 weeks of the season and rank near the bottom of the league in almost every offensive category. We know the story, Mac Jones has had 3 different offensive coordinators and had issues last season with Matt Patricia calling the plays. They bring in Bill O’Brien to fix the offense and work with Mac Jones bringing in the Alabama offense. Here is a glimpse of what it looked like before the Buffalo game.
This is Historically one of the worst offenses of all time. They followed up the Buffalo win with a 31-17 loss to Miami. Mac Jones had a brutal interception before halftime on the left sideline. O’Brien didn’t help the situation calling run plays on 2nd & 18, 2nd & 15 and 2nd & 10. He called 4 passing plays in a row on the goal line. The same guy they traded DeAndre Hopkins for a running back. Below are the numbers entering week 9.
Pats Time of possession – 24:05
*Denver is last at 27:01
First Downs – 13
*Pittsburgh is last at 14.5
Yards per play – 4.3
*Cincinnati is the only team south of 4.3
3rd down – 1/9 (11.1%)
*The Jets are last at 25%
Pats Offense -0.177 epa/play – 30th (only The Jets & The Giants are worse)
Mac Jones -0.122 epa/play – 29th (only Bryce Young, Zach Wilson, & Daniel Jones are worse)
The Patriots lost to Washington 20-17 at Gillette Stadium. They led 14-10 at halftime and scored on a 64-yard rush by Rhamondre Stevenson and a Touchdown pass from Mac Jones to Hunter Henry. The game featured Tyquan Thornton early on who struggled at receiver. He was then benched for Juju Smith-Schuster who was then featured on 2 bubble screens that went nowhere. The Patriots had multiple opportunities to take the lead or time the game in the second half. The Patriots went 3-for-12 on 3rd down and averaged 5.0 yards per pass. The final drive ended with an interception.
