Joe Murray: Unwarranted dislike of the band Creed
It’s 2023 and Creed is back in the spotlight because of sports. The Texas Rangers have rallied around the band’s music since July and find themselves 2 wins away from the world series. How did the Creed trend start? The team said the music helped them get out of a slump in the second half of the season.
“It’s kind of just a random thing that everybody started singing to one day, and it’s kind of built on itself,” Rangers shortstop Corey Seager said. “It’s something to bond over.”
A few weeks ago, the Vikings were also slumping and looking for inspiration. It led to a win. Kirk Cousins told reporters the music is a bit of a departure from the tunes usually “banging on the box” in the Vikings’ locker room, but “it was well-received.” He added that more Creed could be in his teammates’ future.
In 2013, Rolling Stone voted Creed the worst band of the 90s. Beating out Nickelback and Limp Bizkit. I fully admit I’m a Creed fan. The band broke up in 2004. Some may say Scott Stapp is a rip-off of Eddie Vedder. Some people thought it was grunge light. To compare them to the likes of other 2000 Butt Rock bands is an insult.
As many of you know, my favorite band was Alice in Chains. Layne Staley, the band’s lead singer, passed away in April 2002. Jerry Cantrell, the driving force and guitarist, just debuted a double disc album called degradation trip and had to open for Creed. Which I fully admit is an insult. I attended the concert on a beautiful day at the venue formerly known as Great woods. Cantrell was amazing, Duh!. I stayed for Creed, who just released their Weathered album. They played all the hits and it was a great show.
