Felger & Mazz

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported earlier in the week that New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones could be looking for $45 million a year in his new contract. On Tuesday, Felger and Jim Murray discussed how that could affect the contract of Patriots quarterback Mac Jones next season. They also discussed who they’d rather have between the two.

  • Would Mac Jones be worth a big contract next offseason?

Felger: There’s another quarterback situation percolating out there, Murray, that you think does relate to the Patriots. And what is it with Daniel Jones in New York? What do you got?

Jim Murray: Yeah. So yesterday Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Daniel Jones was likely to get the franchise tag by the New York Giants and then Dov Kleiman covering the NFL on Twitter also said that Jones and his agent might want as much as $45 million per year or more. And so I think this is just something to keep an eye on, is the Daniel Jones Giants situation this offseason and the contract that he ultimately gets, because that’s going, to me, establish the floor for Mac Jones. And a year from now we could be going through the same thing here with the Patriots and Mac Jones. And you know given this season that just happened, I can’t help but wonder how Bill Belichick feels about him. Ownership as well. Like, do you think as of right now that Mac Jones is worth $38 to $45 million? I don’t

Felger: I think he will be.

  • Daniel Jones or Mac Jones?

Felger: Mac Jones or Daniel Jones?

Jim Murray: Oh, I got to pick one? I can’t stand either of them. But Daniel Jones ultimately.

Felger: You’re so biased, Murray. You’re blinded by your hatred for Mac Jones.

Jim Murray: No. Mike Who’s more of a dual threat?

Felger: So who’s a better passer?

Jim Murray: Who’s more of a dual threat? What’s more important in today’s NFL with the play actions and the RPOs and the mobility factor? You know this you were just talking up Jordan Love for your Packers doing this. He ran for over 700 yards last year. Again, I can’t stand either of them. But of the two for today’s NFL I’m going with Daniel Jones.

Felger: I mean I’ll almost always take the better passer, Murray. I mean, look, I like guys who can run now too. The leagues become this, you know? So it’s hard to avoid. It’s hard to have a guy that’s not running in some way, shape or form or mobile in some way, shape, or form. So it is valuable for sure. But I’m still deferring to the better passer. So no, I think Mac Jones is superior to Daniel Jones. I think he’ll begin to show that again this year and they’re going to have to pay him. It’s just is what it is. I don’t know how you get away with not paying a quarterback at least $40-$45 million if he’s any good. They’re going to have to bite the bullet. They’re going to have to do it. You going to be the one team that says, “no, we’re not paying our quarterback”. We’re never going to pay a quarterback? That’s just ridiculous.
