BOSTON, MA - APRIL 17: Tyler Bertuzzi #59 of the Boston Bruins checks Anton Lundell #15 of the Florida Panthers during the second period of Game One of the First Round of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs at the TD Garden on April 17, 2023 in Boston, Massachusetts. (Photo by Rich Gagnon/Getty Images)

Tyler Bertuzzi is a classic hockey trope. If he’s your opponent, he’s an absolute pain in the ass. Teammate? Love his antics.

Not surprisingly, Bertuzzi has a big fan in his Bruins teammate, Brad Marchand. Long the chief agitator of the Black & Gold, Marchand has graduated to more of a leadership role as an alternate captain, and obviously as a high-end scorer. But he can still rat it up with the best of them.

So it’s not the least bit shocking that Marchand got a kick out of what Bertuzzi did to poor Nick Cousins in Game 1 on Monday night. Bertuzzi yoinked Cousins’ stick like a sneaky little bastard, then attempted (and failed) to break it after taking it back to the Bruins’ bench. And instantly earned himself tons of fans (and haters) in the process.

In case you’re a Bruins fan and you can’t get enough of the clip (or if you’re a fan of any other team and you can’t stop hate-watching), here’s the moment in question:

  • Marchand told reporters on Wednesday that he caught the clip after the fact and had himself a good laugh.

“I saw that yesterday, I was dying at that,” Marchand said. “I didn’t notice that during the game, but, he’s a little greaseball. I love it. He’s a guy you love to have on your team. That stuff just makes you laugh. It’s funny.”

Marchand also had some feedback on Bertuzzi failing to actually break the stick: “Yeah, I don’t know what he was thinking there, that would’ve been broken or in the crowd if it was me.”

  • Let that be a nice lesson for Bertuzzi: just give the stick to a fan. He could’ve even given it to some young Panthers fan that happened to be in the seats. Might’ve left everyone happy.

Either way, Bertuzzi didn’t take long to endear himself to Cup-hungry Bruins fans and deliver a viral moment. Oh and he also made two assists, including arguably the best play of the game with a no-look pass to set up a David Pastrnak power play goal.

Boston is surely happy to have Bertuzzi on its side.
