The Red Sox lineup has been without a key piece all season, with infielder Trevor Story starting the year on the 60-day IL. Story is still recovering from offseason surgery he had on a ligament in his right (throwing) elbow.

Back in February Story told reporters that in the “best case” scenario he’d be back after the All-Star break, with the worst case scenario being him missing the entire 2023 season. Based on Alex Cora’s update on Monday though, Story certainly seems to be trending towards the former.

  • According to Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, Cora told reporters on Monday that Story is throwing up to 105 feet and taking regular (not high-velocity) batting practice at the team’s facility in Fort Meyers. Story will meet with the team after this week’s road trip “for a check up and to discuss next steps in his rehab.”

Ian Browne of MLB.com added another interesting bit of information, tweeting “Alex Cora did not rule out Trevor Story coming back before he is able to play defense.” That would mean Story back in the lineup as the designated hitter when his elbow his healthy enough to hit but not throw. Although Cora floated that option, he did not give a timeline as to when that could happen.

Cora has said in the past that when Story returns, the plan is to make him the team’s everyday shortstop – the position he played with the Rockies during his first six Major League seasons. Last year in his first year in Boston, he played second base while the team still had Xander Bogaerts.
