— New England Patriots (@Patriots) May 11, 2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Patriots broke the news on Twitter that long-time quarterback Tom Brady will make his return to Foxborough this season – not as a player, but as a fan.

  • O.K., maybe not as a ‘fan’ fan. Don’t expect to see him with a grill and cooler set up in lot 3B. But he will be in attendance for the team’s to-be-determined home opener, where he’ll be honored by the organization after announcing his retirement in February.

    UPDATE: According to

Can confirm. Also, the Eagles game will be the one Tom Brady is honored at. https://t.co/ATpjeGIXLO

    — Mike Giardi (@MikeGiardi) May 11, 2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple reports, the Patriots will open the season Week 1 at home against the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I invited him back to be with us at the opening game and let the fans in New England thank him,” Patriots owner Robert Kraft said on NFL Network Thursday morning. “It will be the beginning of many celebrations to honor Tom Brady.” He passed along that Brady is “very excited” to see the fans in New England.

  • As for exactly how the Patriots will honor Brady? That’s still unknown. One likely item could be retiring his No. 12.

Brady was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft, and became the full-time starter early in 2001 season. That was the first of his six Super Bowl-winning seasons in New England. He left the team as a free agent in 2020, and won an NFL-record seventh ring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Upon his retirement, he holds the Patriots franchise and NFL records for just about every major passing category.

The exact date of his return will be revealed Thursday night, when the NFL releases the full 2023 season schedule. Keep in mind it’s the team’s “home” opener, so it could take place after Week 1 if the Patriots begin the season on the road.
