  • The Patriots aren’t done looking at their external options at wide receiver, as the team will reportedly host free agent Dazz Newsome for a Sunday workout.

Word of Newsome’s upcoming workout was first reported by PFF’s Doug Kyed.

  • The Patriots’ reported interest in getting a look at Newsome comes on the heels of the team losing 2022 draft pick and preseason standout Tyquan Thornton to injury, and will come on the heels of the team’s third and final game of the 2022 preseason.

Newsome, meanwhile, is looking for a work after a preseason that included two catches for 27 receiving yards and a touchdown in two appearances with Chicago.

Drafted by the Bears in the sixth round in 2021, the 5-foot-10 Newsome appeared in three games for the Bears last season, and hauled in two of his five targets for 23 yards.

Newsome’s biggest impact for the 2021 Bears came in the return game, however, as the 23-year-old returned six punts in his three-game run with Chicago last year, and averaged 12.5 yards per punt. Newsome also had a season-long 28-yard return peppered into that six-return sample.

Newsome returned three punts this preseason prior to his release from the Bears, but failed to make anything out of them, and even took an 11-yard loss on his return of the summer.

The Patriots, for what it’s worth, have deployed Myles Bryant, Marcus Jones, J.J. Taylor, and Tre Nixon as their punt-returning options through the first two games of the preseason.

Prior to his time with Chicago, Newsome converted from cornerback to wide receiver at UNC, and was a full-time starter in his final two years with the Tar Heels. Overall, the Virginia-born wideout put up 188 catches for 2,435 yards and 18 touchdowns in 44 games played.

Newsome also returned 48 punts during his collegiate career, an averaged 11.1 yards per return and scored one touchdown in that role.

He also earned Second Team All-ACC honors in 2019 and was an All-ACC honorable mention in 2020.
