— Boston Celtics (@celtics) February 16, 2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced on Thursday morning that they are removing the “interim” tag from Joe Mazzulla, officially naming him as the team’s head coach.

Mazzulla becomes the 19th head coach in franchise history. He had previously coached the Celtics’ first 59 games as the interim head coach. But now that he’s the permanent head coach, Mazzulla also received a contract extension, officially replacing the suspended Ime Udoka.

  • “As he has shown, Joe is a very talented coach and leader,” Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens said in a team press release. “He has a unique ability to galvanize a room around a mission. We are thankful for the work he has done to help get us to this point, and excited that he has agreed to lead us into the future.”

A native of Johnston, Rhode Island, Mazzulla began his coaching career in 2011, and had served as a Celtics assistant coach since 2019. He has also been a weekly guest on Zolak & Bertrand on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Listen below for Mazzulla’s most recent interview.
