  • The Patriots made their first external signing of 2023 free agency Tuesday afternoon, adding tackle Calvin Anderson from the Denver Broncos. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, who first reported the signing, Anderson is getting a two-year deal from the Patriots.

Anderson, who will turn 27 next week, appeared in 10 games for the Broncos last year making seven starts at left tackle. In 289 pass blocking snaps, Anderson allowed 22 pressures and two sacks according to PFF.

  • Anderson has spent the last four seasons with the Broncos. After spending the majority of 2019 on the practice squad and not appearing in any games, he played a mostly reserve role in 2020 and 2021. He’s mainly played left tackle, but did make a start at right tackle in 2020 and has played the position since in the preseason.

In New England, Anderson joins Trent Brown, Conor McDermott, and Andrew Stueber as the only tackles currently under contract for the 2023 season. His positional versatility should give him an inside track on landing one of the backup tackle spots, and depending on the team’s other additions and which side they end up putting Trent Brown on in 2023, he could potentially push for a starting role in camp.

This will technically be Anderson’s second stint with the Patriots. He signed with New England as a UDFA out of Texas in 2019, but was released after just a few weeks. He was then picked up by the Jets and spent his rookie training camp with them before the Broncos signed him off their practice squad in October of that year.
