It’s time for the latest Mazz’s Tiers! In the first Mazz’s Tiers of 2024, Mazz ranks some of the coaches and executives in Boston sports.
Before the tiers, here are some notes about who could appear on the list!
Bill Belichick has been the head coach of the New England Patriots since the 2000 season. During his tenure in New England the Patriots have won 6 Super Bowls. Entering week 18 of the 2023 NFL season Belichick has won 266 games as the head coach of the Patriots.
Claude Julien was the head coach of the Boston Bruins from 2007-2017. He is the all-time leader in wins by a Bruins head coach with 419 regular season wins. Julien was the bench boss fort he Bruins during their Stanley Cup Championship season in 2010-11.
Red Auerbach coached the Boston Celtics from 1950-1966. During that time Auerbach coached the Celtics to 9 NBA Championships. Auerbach also won 7 NBA Championships as an executive for the Celtics.
Terry Francona spent 8 season as the manager of the Boston Red Sox. In his first season as manager he led the Red Sox to a World Series championship in 2004. It was the club’s first World Series title in 86 years. John Farrell (2013) and Alex Cora (2018) joined Francona as recent Red Sox managers who led the team to a World Series victory in their first season as manager of the club.
Dave Lewis spent one season (2006-07) as the head coach of the Boston Bruins. During his brief tenure the Bruins went 35-41-6 and finished in last place in the Northeast Division. Lewis was ultimately replaced behind the bench by Claude Julien.
Doc Rivers led the Boston Celtics to am NBA Finals victory during the 2007-08 season. Rivers spent 9 seasons as the head coach of the Celtics and led them to another NBA Finals appearance during the 2009-10 season where the team ultimately fell in 7 games to the Los Angeles Lakers.
