Boston Celtics

Boston Celtics

  • A trip to Boston of all places allowed the Magic to double their 2022-23 road win total, as Jamahl Mosley’s squad shocked the NBA-best Celtics for a 117-109 win Friday night at TD Garden.

But more than just the Magic’s second road win in 13 tries this season, it was the Moritz Wagner revenge, as the ex-Celtic put up a Magic-leading 25 points on a 9-for-12 shooting night. Wagner’s 25 points were the third-most he’s scored in a single game in his 208-game NBA career, trailing only a 30-point night in Nov. 2019 and a 26-point performance last year.

And those 25 points, in case you were wondering, were 14 more than Wagner scored during his entire nine-game run with the Celtics back in the 2020-21 season.

  • Out of the gate with a 10-point lead midway through the first quarter, this one looked like it had the early makings of a cruise control kind of victory for the Celtics. But the Celtics quickly witnessed their edge turn into a four-point deficit by the end of the first quarter, as the Magic were led by a 13-point opening quarter from 2022 No. 1 overall pick Paolo Banchero.

And Banchero’s squad never looked back, as they carried that lead throughout the rest of the night.

  • Down by eight points through 24 minutes of action, the third quarter was much of the same for the Celtics, as the team failed to make much of a dent in a frame that ended with Boston outscoring the Magic by a mere point (27-26), and the fourth quarter failed to come with a push from Joe Mazzulla’s squad.

The three-point shooting proved to be the biggest difference maker in the second half of this contest, really, as the Celtics were forced to repeatedly go deep in an attempt to slice the deficit, and instead found themselves on the board with just four conversions on 21 second-half tries from beyond the arc (19 percent success rate).

The Celtics’ Jayson Tatum led all Boston shooters in the losing effort, with 31 points in 38 minutes. Tatum’s 2-for-8 performance from deep, however, was his sixth-worst three-point performance of the season.

And to the shock of absolutely no one, the Celtics dropped to 2-5 in 2022-23 games that have featured a three-point percentage of 25 percent of lower from Tatum.

  • The Green’s loss also came despite some big returns to action, as the Celtics got both Al Horford and Robert Williams III back on the floor for this game.

Horford’s return, which came after the veteran big missed all but one game of Boston’s recent six-game road trip, featured six points and six rebounds in just under 16 minutes of play before he was ejected for making “unnecessary and aggressive contact to the groin area of the opponent” in the third quarter.

Williams III, meanwhile, appeared in his first game since Game 6 of the 2022 NBA Finals after undergoing knee surgery, and finished with nine points, five rebounds, and a block in 17:34.

  • The loss put an end to what was a 10-game win streak over the Magic for the Celtics, with Friday’s loss standing as their first loss to the Disney Dunkers since Apr. 7, 2019.

The Celtics won’t have to wait long to get some revenge on the Magic, as the teams will reconnect for a Sunday night rematch at TD Garden.
