Both of the Boston Bruins’ losses in their series against the Florida Panthers have come because of egregious turnovers. They just made the worst one yet, from the absolute last person they wanted to make it.

In the end, it was goaltender Linus Ullmark who gave away the puck that ended up in the back of the net in overtime on Wednesday night at TD Garden, spoiling the Bruins’ chance to eliminate the Panthers and forcing a Game 6 down in Florida. Ullmark attempted to clear the puck around the boards, but it ended up on the stick of a waiting Carter Verhaeghe, who fed it toward the net and off a sprawling Ullmark’s skate.

Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk was crashing the net at that moment, and was able to gather the bouncing puck for a backhand into the gaping net, giving the Panthers a 4-3 win and keeping the series alive.

  • Days after going viral for a confrontation with Tkachuk down at FLA Live Arena in Game 4, Ullmark is now going viral for an entirely different reason. But like the true pro he is, the goaltender faced the music and fielded questions about the play after the game.

“I tried to send it out to the corner a little bit and bypass [Verhaeghe], he makes a good play catching it, and the rest is history,” Ullmark said.

After a screw-up like that, there’s not much you really can say as far as what happened, what you saw, what you were thinking. What really matters is how Ullmark and the Bruins respond to this.

  • Ullmark has a unique way of putting things in his media appearances, win or lose. After his game-ending gaffe, he described the need for a short memory.

“I’ll have to look at it tonight or tomorrow and see what i could’ve done better,” Ullmark said. “Maybe I should’ve rimmed it, maybe I should have gone up the middle. It’s hard to say.

“This is what happened. It’s all about having the mind of a goldfish.”

  • How does Ullmark flush this thing? Not the goldfish. He IS the goldfish. How does he have the mind of a goldfish, and flush this loss?

“For me, it’s looking at the footage, try to take the positive things out of this game and then bring that in for Game 6,” Ullmark added.

That being said … Ullmark’s optimism is decidedly not the strongest fit for the Fellowship of the Miserable up here in Boston. But it’s probably a better mindset to have after a loss than to wallow in misery. Let the fans take care of that shit.

Ullmark just needs to go into goldfish mode. But if there’s any memory the Bruins want to retain, it’s how they’ve played on the road in this series, and that’s the game they’re going to want to channel in Game 6. Because the last thing they want is to leave sunny Florida and come back to chilly, dumpy Boston having to play a Game 7.

“It’s a new day tomorrow,” Ullmark said. “We’re gonna go back, have a good night’s sleep, get back up, see the sunshine again, and then we’ll travel to Florida and go back at it.”
