Boston Celtics

For those of you hoping to buy the jersey of the Celtics’ biggest offseason acquisition (so far), good news! Kristaps Porzingis already has his jersey number, which was revealed on Tuesday.

Porzingis jerseys with the No. 8 were spotted in the team store, by fans who posted them to social media. The team later confirmed the number assignment.

  • No. 8 is a new number for Porzingis. Throughout his eight-year NBA career to this point he’s worn No. 6, but that number is retired both by the Celtics and now league-wide in honor of the late Bill Russell.

Porzingis will be the 17th player in Celtics history to wear No. 8, which went unissued last season. Malik Fitts and Josh Richardson both wore it at times during the 2021-2022 season. The last full-time No. 8 was Kemba Walker from 2020-2021, while other notable Celtics No. 8s include Scott Wedman (1983-1987), Antoine Walker (1997-2003), Al Jefferson (briefly as a rookie in 2005), and Jeff Green (2011-2015).
