Felger & Mazz

It was reported on Friday that the Jaylen Brown contract discussions with the Boston Celtics would be put on pause while he is overseas for a NBPA event. On Friday’s Felger and Mazz, J-Stew gave the latest on what his phone was hearing about the pause between the two parties.

Why the pause in discussions?

Jim Murray: I’ve teased it enough, J-Stew, what do you know on the pause between the Boston Celtics and Jaylen Brown when it comes to his supermax contract? What is your phone telling you? What intel do you have for the people?

J-Stew: I believe the Celtics are trying to do something else and order of sequence is very important in the NBA so that’s why the pause for Jaylen Brown is because if the Celtics are able to accomplish what they are trying to accomplish, and they might not, jaylen Brown might take less money on his five year supermax contract.

Jim Murray: Huh? Well, that’s encouraging. So that would mean he obviously wants to stay if he’s going to take less money, if they’re going to try to figure something out. Any names? Did you get names?

J-Stew: I did not get a name. I would speculate, but this is a Jayson Tatum guy, that it might be Trae Young because it just seems he would fit. Unless it’s a big man. But in my mind I’m trying to figure out who Jaylen Brown may be friends with who’s a big and what that might mean for say a Rob Williams or an Al Horford. Myles Turner was on Team USA with Jaylen Brown. I don’t think that’s the name but I tend to believe that the reason why the Jaylen Brown extension is on pause is because the Celtics are trying to do something else so that it sequences properly in the NBA salary cap. And if this player gets acquired, then Jaylen Brown is going to take less money and be with the Celtics for the next five years.
