Boston Celtics

  • The Boston Celtics are cooking.

Off to the best start in the NBA, with 18 wins through 22 games played, the Celtics’ dominance has extended beyond the record. Averaging a league-high 121.9 points per game, the Celtics also rank first in field goal percentage (49.8), and have also been the league’s top shooting club from beyond the arc, with a league-leading 373 three-point shots drained and a league-best 40.8 percent mark from deep.

Things are simply going better than anybody could have expected when the team suspended head coach Ime Udoka, who led the club to the NBA Finals in his first season on the job, prior to the season. And now they have a pair of honors to show for it, as announced by the league on Thursday night.

  • On the floor, Celtics superstar and early-season MVP favorite Jayson Tatum was honored as the KIA NBA Eastern Conference Player of the Month for October-November.

Through 21 starts, Tatum is averaging career-highs in points per game (31.6), field goal percentage (48.8 percent), and free throw percentage (87.3 percent), and is also averaging 7.8 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

Tatum has also had eight efforts of at least 35 points, and put up a season-high 49 points in the Celtics’ last outing, a 134-121 win over the Heat in a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals.

  • Tatum has made some league history this season, too, as he became the first player in league history to record multiple games of at least 45 points, 10-plus rebounds, and eight-plus three pointers with his aforementioned 49-point performance against Miami this past Wednesday.

Overall, the 24-year-old Tatum is second in the NBA in total points this season (664 points), trailing only Brooklyn’s Kevin Durant (699), and it’s worth noting that Durant has played two more games than Tatum on the year to date. Tatum has also dropped 74 three-pointers, which is good for fifth-most in the league this season, and Tatum is currently one of just four players averaging at least 30 points and seven rebounds per game this year.

This is Tatum’s second career Player of the Month honor, trailing only Paul Pierce (three) and Larry Bird (seven) for the most such honors in franchise history.

  • On the bench, meanwhile, Celtics interim head coach Joe Mazzulla was honored as the NBA Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for games played in October and November.

This is essentially Mazzulla picking up where Udoka left off, actually, as Udoka won Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honors in both February and March-April last season.

  • This marks the Celtics 16th overall NBA Coach of the Month honor since the award’s inception during the 1982-83 season, which is tied for the fourth-most honors given to any franchise in league history.

Under Mazzulla’s guidance, the Celtics managed a franchise first in November when they averaged at least 123.0 points and shot over 50.0 percent from the field during one calendar month (min. 10 games).

The Celtics also scored 120-plus points in five consecutive games for only the second time since 1979 and posted the 14th all-time streak with at least five straight such games in team history.

Mazzulla’s C’s have also done their damage against fellow top-tier talent, as the Green have posted a 10-2 record against teams over .500 this season.
