Felger & Mazz

Greg Bedard of BostonSportsJournal.com joined Felger and Mazz on Tuesday, as he does every Tuesday during the NFL season. Bedard did his 3 up and 3 down from Super Bowl LVIII between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers while on with the guys!

But before the 3 up and 3 down, here’s some stats and facts from the Super Bowl….

The Kansas City Chiefs became just the eighth team in Super Bowl history to win back to back Championships. The Chiefs are the first team since the 2003 & 2004 New England Patriots to win back to back titles.

The San Francisco 49ers have now lost 3 consecutive Super Bowl appearances. The 49ers were 5-0 in their previous 5 appearances.

The Kansas City Chiefs joined the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers as the teams to have won 4 Super Bowls. The Chiefs now trail only the San Francisco 49ers (5), Dallas Cowboys (5), Pittsburgh Steelers (6), and New England Patriots (6) in Super Bowl victories.

Super Bowl LIX will take place at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday February 9th, 2025. It will be the eighth time that the Superdome in New Orleans has hosted the Super Bowl and the first since XLVII that was won by the Baltimore Ravens.

Super Bowl LVIII was only the second ever Super Bowl to go to overtime. Super Bowl LI between the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons was the only other game to go to overtime in Super Bowl history. The Patriots won their fifth of six Super Bowls in that game where they came back from a 28-3 deficit.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes moved into a tie for fourth all-time with Troy Aikman in Super Bowl wins by a starting quarterback. Mahomes now trails only Joe Montana (4), Terry Bradshaw (4), and Tom Brady (7) in Super Bowl wins as a starting quarterback.

Greg Bedard: It’s his ability to just improvise and to make plays when the game is on the line. Like, I mean, there was a lot of pressure early on in the game and they were frustrated. But because the score didn’t get away from them, they could stick with things. I mean, they didn’t have much of a running game in this with Pacheco yet. But Mahomes, his ability to make plays on his feet and the secondary reaction plays.

Greg Bedard: He was San Francisco’s best quarterback in this game. Threw a touchdown and had his own touchdown. On film, he is easily their best receiver against man coverage. He ran some outstanding routes in that game. The touchdown that was a good throw by Purdy, the little slant there with a guy on his back, he breaks a tackle and goes in. He was the best player to me on San Francisco’s offense in this game. And I’m not saying that Christian McCaffrey wasn’t good, but, he was tremendous. And that that throw that he made on the touchdown play, I mean he got walloped and he still made it.

  • Chris Jones

Greg Bedard: I’m going Chris Jones slightly over Trent McDuffie. They’re very close. But Jones with six quarterback pressures and was really good against the run. When the defense needs a play he just manhandles or beats his blocker all the time. He’s incredible.

  • 3 DOWN

    Aaron Banks

Greg Bedard: Aaron Banks, the 49ers left guard. He was awful in this game. Gave up five pressures. I thought the 49ers offensive line was not good in general, especially as the game game went on.

  • Oren Burks

Greg Bedard: 49ers linebacker Oren Burks, who came in for Dre Greenlaw. He was awful in that game. PFF had him giving up nine receptions on nine targets. He was in on the game winning touchdown and h looked completely lost in space. He was slow. He was not good enough in this game at all.

  • Deebo Samuel

Greg Bedard: He was not good enough against man coverage. Now he was probably injured a little bit, he did come up with that hammy and I give him credit for continuing on, but he not get off press man. And the Chiefs basically said, like, “we’re going to man you up all over the place. You can’t beat us. We’re going to bring pressure almost all the time and there’s nothing you can do”. And there was nothing the Niners could do about it.
