Rebounding from an ugly two-game stretch, including a shutout loss to the Flyers, the Boston Bruins flipped the script and left the Philadelphia ice with a 3-0 road shutout win on Saturday.

Captain Brad Marchand scored a goal and an assist for the Bruins, who simplified their offensive game and controlled the action for much of the 60 minutes. They out-shot the Flyers 31-20 on the afternoon, as goaltender Joonas Korpisalo stopped all 20 for his first shutout since April 10, 2023, for the Los Angeles Kings.

The Bruins dictated the play from the jump in the first period, consistently getting pucks deep in the Flyers zone and creating opportunities around the net, leading to a 14-5 shot on goal advantage in the opening 20 minutes. They were rewarded with the first goal of the game, which was of course all they needed.

It came off the stick of second-year forward Matthew Poitras, as he shoveled the puck toward the net from around the goal line and got the bounce he needed past Flyers netminder Aleksei Kolosov.

  • In a play that shouldn’t go unnoticed, during a late-first-period Bruins power play, center Elias Lindholm got back to defend a 2-on-1 shorthanded rush and disrupted the cross-ice pass, denying the Flyers a golden opportunity and keeping the score 1-0 into the first intermission.

Overall, in the first period, the Bruins held a massive 22-7 advantage in 5-on-5 shot attempts. They also had five high-danger chances at 5-on-5, compared to none for Philadelphia.

The Flyers generated more pressure during the second period, including a couple of scoring chances during a mid-period power play, and a 19-11 advantage in 5-on-5 shot attempts. But it was the Bruins who scored the next goal, extending their lead to 2-0 after Marchand protected the puck around the back of the net and fed it to Justin Brazeau for the one-timer and the score.

  • The B’s ultimately escaped the second period with their lead still at 2-0. That’s how the score would hold for most of the third, until Marchand launched one from deep in his own zone and all the way into the empty net, icing the game for good. Tempers flared in the final minute, as the Bruins’ Trent Frederic tussled with the Flyers’ Travis Konecny behind the Philly net.

It was a much-needed response for the Bruins (5-6-1), after getting crushed 8-2 by the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night down in Raleigh. It may be tough to keep it going in the second leg of a back-to-back after travelling back to Boston, but on Sunday they get a beatable opponent in the 5-5-1 Seattle Kraken.
