The Boston Bruins improved to 7-7-1 on the season with a 4-3 overtime win over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night at TD Garden. Brad Marchand scored the game-winner for the B’s in extra time.

The B’s built a 3-1 lead with two quick second-period goals, but the Flames roared their way back into it with two third-period scores to set the stage for OT. Marchand whacked home his own rebound for the game-winner, his fourth of the season.

Bruins goaltender Joonas Korpisalo stopped 33-of-36 shots (.917) on the night, improving to 3-2 on the season.

Initially, it looked like the Bruins would be able to ride a hot start to an early lead and maintain it with a fast, aggressive style of play. They did grab the early lead, but it was unfortunately short-lived. First, Hampus Lindholm gave the Bruins a 1-0 advantage as he deked around a pressuring Dustin Wolf and tucked it in past the Flames goaltender for his third goal of the season.

  • The Flames answered Lindholm’s goal just 19 seconds later. Defenseman Tyson Barrie bombed the puck from out near the blue line, and despite a clean look at the shot, Korpisalo couldn’t make the stop, as it snuck through him to make it a 1-1 game.

  • The Bruins and Flames exchanged power plays late in the period, but neither team could cash in, making it 1-1 after one. It was about midway through the second period that the B’s really broke through.

Pavel Zacha gave the Bruins the lead back after one-timing a loose puck from the slot, after David Pastrnak gave it a good whack from the half boards and got the bounce he needed. The goal was just Zacha’s second of the season.

  • Just 31 seconds after Zacha’s score, the Bruins extended their lead. Sparked off a strong rush and seeing-eye pass by Charlie Coyle through the crease, a waiting Cole Koepke tipped the puck in far-side to make it 3-1.

  • Through two periods, the Flames held the advantage in shot attempts at five-on-five with a 32-28 edge. But Boston generated six high-danger chances at full strength, compared to just four for Calgary, and all three goals.

The Flames battled back to a tie game in the third. First, Bruins captain Brad Marchand took an ill-advised roughing penalty after getting caught face-washing Calgary’s Martin Pospisil. Yegor Sharangovich tipped a point shot by Mackenzie Weegar to cash in on the power play and cut the Bruins’ lead to 3-2.

  • Nearly midway through the third, veteran Nazem Kadri found the equalizer, as he carried the puck against big-bodied defenseman Nikita Zadorov and used him as a screen to snipe it past Korpisalo, glove side, to tie the game 3-3.

Ultimately, the Bruins kept the game at a tie to get the first point and head to overtime. On the game-winning goal, Elias Lindholm earned an assist by forcing the turnover that led to Marchand’s goal.
