Boston Bruins

Boston Bruins

The Bruins are suddenly dealing with a rash of injuries at left wing.

Most concerning, but also most positive, was the injury status of Brad Marchand. Fortunately, he’s OK. Bruins head coach Jim Montgomery told 98.5 The Sports Hub’s Toucher and Rich on Friday that Marchand is expected to suit up for Saturday’s matinée against the New York Rangers at TD Garden.

It’s less promising for Taylor Hall, who is believed to be dealing with a serious injury and will need at least the rest of the regular season to recover. It’s possible that, if able to return, he will need to play through it before undergoing further treatment in the off-season.

As for the Nick Foligno injury, we finally have more clarity on his situation.

Juggernaut #NHLBruins have been one of busiest teams adding Bertuzzi, (Orr)lov and Hathaway.

Possible they add more? Few assets, but cap space - and now injuries.

Early word: Foligno may miss rest of reg season. Hall still getting eval'd for knee injury, maybe in ~4 week range.

    — Frank Seravalli (@frank_seravalli) March 3, 2023" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Frank Seravelli on Friday, Foligno “may miss the rest of the [regular season]” with a lower body injury. Foligno had to leave Monday’s game against the Calgary Flames after colliding with defenseman Nikita Zadorov. It looked really bad from an optics standpoint, so the idea that Foligno could return for the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs makes his status promising.

In the meantime, the Bruins will roll with pre-deadline acquisition Tyler Bertuzzi at left wing. Montgomery told Toucher and Rich that he’s likely to begin on the third line next to Charlie Coyle. On the fourth line, you’re likely to see a mix of A.J. Greer and Jakub Lauko, depending on matchups and scheduling.

Bertuzzi is in Boston and skating with the team on Friday.

  • Preservation ought to be the Bruins’ priority at this point of the season, anyway. They have a 15-point lead for home ice throughout the playoffs and a 17-point lead in the Atlantic Division, and can afford to schedule some losses in the name of being fresh and healthy for a Cup run.

So, expect to see days off for the Bruins’ veterans and key players down the stretch. Hopefully, they don’t fall in love with chasing history in terms of their regular season accomplishments, because we all know what the real goal is. But they know that, so there’s not much to worry about there.
