  • When it came to the aesthetics of the upcoming 2023 Winter Classic at Fenway Park, Bruins netminders Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark certainly understood the assignment.

In fact, they aced it with flying colors that pay homage to the B’s past in net.

  • With the showdown at Fenway just over two weeks away, Friday’s practice at Warrior Ice Arena came with every B’s skater and both goalies beginning the process of breaking their new gear in, and neither goalie disappointed.

For Ullmark, who is looking like a legitimate Vezina contender (and perhaps a favorite at this rate), the set comes with a mask that gives a proper nod to Andy Moog, and a pad combination that pays tribute to Byron Dafoe’s star-heavy set.

Moog’s mask is easily one of the best in Bruins history — especially with how it went with the jerseys worn by the franchise during that era of Bruins hockey — and set the table for the design that Tuukka Rask had on his mask for almost his entire Bruins career.

Now, it’s Ullmark’s turn to wear a bear head.

“Overall, I just wanted to have something that’s very simple, but also detailed in a way, so when you look at it from a distance, you could see what it is,” Ullmark said of the mask. “It really suited how I wanted the mask to be. I wanted it to be a little more old school.”

  • And as a child of the 90s, whenever you’re talking Lord Byron, I’m listening. It’s a weakness I simply cannot help fix, nor one I necessarily want to fix. (Kyle McLaren Forever.)

“Late 80s, early-90s, we got Lord Byron,” Ullmark said of the pad combination. “I just loved the swag that he had. So now when we had the opportunity to actually do this here in Boston, I was very excited.”

A nice touch to Ullmark’s pads, in addition to some worn-looking effects on them, comes with the Black and Gold’s retired numbers inside of the gold stars that will be featured on the pillows.

  • The set also got the seal of approval from Dafoe, a top-eight Vezina finalist two times and a top-12 Hart Trophy finalist two times during his five-year tenure with the Bruins, himself via Twitter.

  • Swayman, meanwhile, will go with a classic ‘old school’ looking set of TRUE brown pads, and went with a Sox-focused mask with this game given the iconic setting of this contest with the Penguins.

On the right side of Swayman’s mask, there’s three black-and-white portraits of Red Sox legends David Ortiz, Ted Williams, and Curt Schilling. The left side of the mask features both the 2023 NHL Winter Classic logo, as well as Fenway Park’s logo, and features the Boston Red Sox logo on the top of the mask.

“Ted Williams, Curt Schilling, and David Oritz, obviously three household names here in Boston,” Swayman said. “To be able to put them on my mask and obviously pay tribute is something special.

“I just wanted to make sure that I put everything on the mask — obviously representing the Bruins and the Red Sox as well — because in Boston, every team here obviously means a ton to the city.”

  • This will be the Black and Gold’s fourth time skating in the Winter Classic, and in addition to this being their first since the 2019 game at Notre Dame, it will be their second time skating in it at Fenway Park.

Overall, the Bruins are 3-1-0 in outdoor games since 2010, with two wins in Winter Classic contests, as well as an outdoor win over the Flyers at scenic Lake Tahoe during the 2021 season.
