Through 80 games this season the Boston Red Sox have already used 11 different starting pitchers. That’s an average of using a new starter just over every seven games.

The starting rotation’s issues with injuries and inconsistencies has been arguably been the biggest issue for the .500 ballclub this season. It’s a spot that would make sense to add at if the Red Sox are going to be buyers at the deadline. While They’re not going that far just yet, they did make an addition on Wednesday.

  • According to multiple reports, the Red Sox have signed 30-year-old righty Dinelson Lamet to a minor league deal. Lamet is initially being assigned to Triple-A Worcester.

Lamet has been pitching in the majors since 2017, when he debuted with the San Diego Padres. He had a breakout season in 2020, going 3-1 in 12 starts with a 2.09 ERA and 93 strikeouts over 69 innings in the pandemic-shortened season. For that effort, he was named All-MLB Second Team after the season. He also finished fourth in NL Cy Young voting.

  • In the years since, Lamet has struggled to find similar success. He was waived by the Padres late in the 2021 season, then signed by the Colorado Rockies.

In his first full season in Colorado this year, Lamet struggled. He made 16 appearances including four starts, and posted an 11.57 ERA in 25.2 innings. The Rockies released him last week.

While Lamet will start off with the Red Sox in the Minors, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him end up with the big league ball club at some point. The team has a need for pitching – in particular starting pitching – with multiple starters on IL and others having been moved to the bullpen due to performance.
