The Boston Red Sox are looking to add pitching depth in the days since moving Tanner Houck to the injured list.

Houck was recently placed on the 15-day IL with a facial fracture, as

But now, they’re reportedly adding a veteran pitcher to the pipeline to help back things up.

    — Chris Cotillo (@ChrisCotillo) June 19, 2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chris Cotillo of MassLive first reported Monday morning that the Red Sox are signing 33-year-old righty Kyle Barraclough to a minor league deal. Barraclough has never started a game in the major leagues, so it doesn’t feel likely that he’d be a direct replacement for Houck.

But Cotillo added that Barraclough has been stretched out to be a starter during his time with the High Point Rockers in the Atlantic League, so there’s a possibility that he could end up making his first career start in a Boston uniform.

  • Barraclough (pronounced like “bear claw”) has seven seasons of major league experience dating back to 2015. He’s pitched in the majors every year but 2020 since he debuted. He’s amassed 274.1 career relief innings between the Marlins, Nationals, Giants, Twins, and Angels.

The veteran most recently made eight relief appearances for the Angels in 2022, posting a 3.00 ERA in nine innings.

  • We’ll see if Barraclough even makes it up to Boston, let alone makes an impact on the major league roster. The hope is that Houck’s injury isn’t serious enough that he’s out for longer than 15 days.
