  • Fred Toucher: What did you ascertain from the conversations yesterday?

Andrew Callahan: Well, starting with that, I was a little surprised. This is the coach who starts every summer when we ask about past seasons or past players saying that doesn’t matter. We’re moving on. We’re looking forward. We’re on to Cincinnati. Day by day. Everything else. And here it sounds like the guy at the gym who tells you I could have made high school All-State if I didn’t blow out my knee.

Rich Shertenlieb: Is Al Bundy all of a sudden, right?

Andrew Callahan: Yeah. Uncle Rico. I get it because Belichick is very proud and he is entitled to that attitude of being He’s had the greatest 20 year run in NFL history. Greatest coach of all time. Eight Super Bowls. No one’s taking that away from him. But the last three years have been slim pickings and it feels like he’s living off the fat of that 20 year run. But right now, as it stands, listen to him. Kraft He’s getting all skinny.

  • Rich Shertenlieb: Yeah. And and it was interesting, too, because there was that comment which stood out because everyone, of course, immediately goes well I mean Brady, Let’s not dismiss the fact that you had him and it wasn’t all you for those 25 years that you got the benefit of the doubt for. But also when he was asked about Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe and are you willing to commit that Mac Jones is your starter. Did you think that it was a bad thing that he didn’t come immediately out and say that he’s our guy and change his tone from what he said at the beginning of last season?

Andrew Callahan: Well, it was not only what he said at the beginning of last season, but it’s everything that he said from October on. Mac back comes back from the injury. And the question is, is he your quarterback on Sunday? Then we get a we’ll see. Then it was Is your quarterback of the future after Mac got the start against the Jets and he never anointed him not only just the quarterback of the future but the quarterback of the rest of that season in November and on December, not in January at his end of season press conference, the last time we heard from Belichick until yesterday, when Belichick said, “I think he can play in this league”. So even if the Patriots are and what I believe to be an incredibly unlikely scenario, looking to trade Mac Jones and say get a Lamar Jackson, hype up your quarterback. He’s a trade asset now. So yes I was surprised even though it’s fallen in line with everything we’ve heard from Belichick the last five or six months because in my mind it only behooves him to say Mac’s our guy, something he did as recently as July.
