Friday night, the NHL announced the Boston Bruins will host the 2023 Winter Classic at Fenway Park. The opponent for the game will be revealed at a later date.
This will be the fifth time the Bruins play an NHL game outdoors – they are 3-1 in the previous four games. Of those four, three were other Winter Classics games, with the Bruins hosting twice. They’re 1-1 as the host team in the Winter Classic.
The Bruins’ first outdoor came came in 2010 in the third playing of the Winter Classic. Marco Sturm’s overtime goal gave the B’s a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Fenway Park.
Six years later, the Bruins headed 20 miles south to another of New England’s predominant outdoor sports venues – Gillette Stadium. Hosting their rivals, the Montreal Canadiens, the Bruins fell 5-1.
In 2019, the Bruins played their first outdoors game as the road team. They traveled to Indiana and Notre Dame Stadium, where they defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 in front of 76,126 fans – the third-most in Winter Classic history.
Last year, the Bruins went back outdoors as part of the NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe series. They game away from a visibly-stunning setting with a 7-3 win.
