Bruins Acquire Forward Tommy Wingels From Blackhawks
The Bruins acquired forward Tommy Wingels from the Chicago Blackhawks for a fifth-round pick in the 2019 draft just before the NHL trade deadline.
Elliotte Friedman first tweeted on Monday that the B’s and ‘Hawks were talking about a Wingels deal. Then Jay Zawaski of 670 The Score in Chicago tweeted that the Bruins were sending a fifth-rounder.
UPDATE: The Bruins announced that the trade is for a conditional fifth-round pick in 2019. It becomes a fourth-rounder if the Bruins win a playoff series or re-sign Wingels next season.
Wingels who primarily plays center, scored seven goals and five assists with a minus-10 rating with the Blackhawks.
The 6-foot, 200-pound Wingels provides the Bruins with depth at the center position. The hope, like with Brian Gionta, is that he never sees the ice at the NHL level, because that would likely indicate an injury or severe under-performance by one of their top-4 centermen.
Don Sweeney finishes the 2018 trade deadline with a mix of depth trades and major moves. In addition to sending a big package to the Rangers for Rick Nash, he acquired Nick Holden from New York and sent Frank Vatrano to the Panthers for a third-round pick.
