Red Sox catcher Reese McGuire had himself a bit of an injury scare on Saturday night in Milwaukee.

McGuire had already entered the game to replace Connor Wong after pinch-hitting for him in the seventh inning of the Red Sox’ 5-4 loss to the Brewers. So, it was concerning to see McGuire take a foul ball off the top of his throwing hand in the bottom half of the inning.

The catcher tried taping up his hand and momentarily had trouble throwing the ball back to the pitcher, but decided to forgo the tape and tough it out the rest of the game. Catchers.

• But after getting X-rays on his hand following the end of the game, McGuire had a positive update for reporters in the clubhouse.

  “It’s a little swollen right now, a little bruised,” McGuire said. “But I just got some X-rays and it’s all negative. That’s really good news. I had a smile on my face because it was kind of throbbing. I’m going to go ice right after this and be ready for tomorrow.”

  Manager Alex Cora said he wasn’t even sure who the Red Sox’ emergency catcher would have been, had they needed to go that route (via Pete Abraham).

• McGuire ended up flying out to end the game. The Red Sox are now 6-4 in their last 10 games, with the series finale coming up on Sunday at 2:10 p.m. ET American Family Field.

  However, it appears that Cora will try to give McGuire the day off to let him rest his hand. Wong is back in as the starting catcher for Sunday’s game, with Brayan Bello on the mound.
