Jaylen Brown is becoming more of a playoff warrior with each passing game. The fact he just led the Celtics in scoring with a deep cut on his right hand is only the latest chapter.

The Celtics held off a second-half rally by the Atlanta Hawks to win Game 1 of their first-round playoff series by a 112-99 final, with Brown’s 29 points leading the way. Brown led all scorers in the second half alone with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting, and closed strong with seven points in the fourth quarter. And he did it all with that cut hand.

Literally, the thing got cut again.

  • “It’s fine,” Brown said on his hand. “It split open during the game, but it’s fine.”

Brown added that they’ll take another look at the hand tomorrow, without adding details about getting re-stitched.

Head coach Joe Mazzulla said that Brown had to switch out the bandage on his hand for a new one. So there was some leakage there. Ew.

But, obviously, Brown didn’t show much hesitation out there playing with the stitched-up hand. He started the game right off with a steal and a bucket to set the tone for the Celtics, who set a new franchise record for a playoff game with 74 first-half points (via StatMuse).

  • Brown sent a much louder message in the second quarter, when – and hopefully this isn’t where he split his hand open – he took a slick bounce-pass from Marcus Smart and threw down a thunderous dunk.

  • Brown finished with 12 rebounds, three assists, and a steal to go with the game-high 29 points. He did have six turnovers, and was quick to admit to reporters after the game that his handle wasn’t perfect. But all in all, not bad for a guy with about 1 3/4 hands.

Brown has two days for his hand to continue healing, before the Celtics and Hawks do battle again in Game 2 on Tuesday night at TD Garden. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
