The Boston Bruins announced a ton of promotions and changes to their hockey operations department on Wednesday. Twenty announcements, to be exact.

No, General Manager Don Sweeney has not been fired. He remains in his post, along with President Cam Neely. All the changes are coming directly below Sweeney, but with some notable names in the organization getting new titles.

Many of the Bruins’ front office changes involve internal movement, so some of these names will be familiar to those who already know some of the staff. But there will also be familiar names to longtime Bruins/hockey fans. So let’s go over the updates…

Jamie Langenbrunner promoted to assistant GM

Fans of NHL hockey from the ’90s and 2000s are probably familiar with Langenbrunner from his playing career with the Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils. But he’s now in his eighth season in the Bruins’ front office and continues to rise up the ranks.

Langenbrunner began in 2015 as the Bruins’ player development coordinator, then in 2020 was named director of player development and player personnel advisor. Perhaps not coincidentally, the Bruins’ drafting has been getting better reviews from people around the league in the past 2-3 years.

Now, Langenbrunner is basically Sweeney’s second in command. Whether in Boston or elsewhere, he looks poised to become a whole-ass GM one day.

Dennis Bonvie named Director of Pro Scouting

The above photo is 16 years old, from Bonvie’s playing days, full disclosure. Bruins fans who were sentient beings in the early 2000s may remember Bonvie from his one season with the Black & Gold, when he played 23 games, scored three points, and racked up 84 (!) penalty minutes.

Irrelevant but funny fact: Bonvie played 70 games for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the AHL in the 2005-06 season, and amassed a simply outrageous 431 (!!!) penalty minutes. Basically averaged a fight per game.

Bonvie was a goon’s goon. Maybe he’s got a future in Player Safety. But for now, he’ll be in charge of the Bruins’ scouting in free agency and the trade market. Sweeney has made some pretty good trades over the years…

Ryan Nadeau named director of amateur scouting

Perhaps it was Nadeau who suggested to Sweeney, “Maybe we should draft more Canadians?” That seems like a good hockey strategy. Four of the Bruins’ six selections in the 2022 draft played in Canadian junior leagues. One of their more promising prospects, 2021 third-round pick Brett Harrison, grew up in London, Ontario and played for the Oshawa Generals in the OHL.

It’s probably not a coincidence that drafting kids who have hockey coursing through their veins may be paying off. And considering Nadeau’s promotion, it’s likely he’s had a big hand in those recent improvements.

Nadeau has been with the Bruins since the Mike O’Connell days, though. He started in media relations in 2003, before moving to hockey operations in 2006. He’s been working with the scouting department in some capacity since 2010, but this is his biggest promotion yet.

In addition to Nadeau’s promotion, the Bruins announced Dean Malkoc as their new associate director of amateur scouting, and Darren Yopyk as their assistant director of amateur scouting.

Other Changes

The Bruins also announced many smaller changes in other areas of the hockey operations department. Here’s a quick rundown, per a press release from the team…

— Brett Harkins has been named Head College Scout.

— Parker MacKay has been named Amateur and College Scout.

— John McLean, Tom Ford and David Breen have been named Skating and Skills Consultants.

— Dustin Stuck has been named Head Athletic Trainer.

— Joe Robinson has been named Head Physical Therapist.

— Scott Waugh has been named Manager of Player Rehabilitation.

— Chris Porter has been named Assistant Physical Therapist.

— Seth Greenberg and Natalie Johnson have been named Massage Therapists.

— Seth Reimer has been named Data Engineer.

— Dan Panaite has been named Developer.

— Brij Singh has been named Manager of Team Operations.

— Laurenne Mercier has been named Manager of Team Services and Hockey Administration.

Sweeney himself spoke to reporters on Wednesday, in the wake of the team’s flurry of player announcements on Monday. That of course included the returns of Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci, as well as an agreement to a deal with Pavel Zacha that avoided arbitration.
