Carles Gil Earns 2022 ESPY Award Nomination for Best MLS Player
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – New England Revolution midfielder and captain Carles Gil has been nominated for the Best MLS Player Award at the 2022 ESPYS presented by Capital One. Gil, the 2021 Landon Donovan MLS MVP and 2021 MLS Comeback Player of the Year, is among four nominees for this year’s award, joining forwards Valentin Castellanos (New York City FC), Jesús Ferreira (FC Dallas), and Carlos Vela (Los Angeles FC).
Gil, a two-time MLS Best XI selection and the second MLS MVP winner in Revolution history, finished the 2021 campaign with a league-high 18 assists on the year as he helped the Revolution win the 2021 Supporters’ Shield and set an MLS record with 73 regular season points and a club record 22 wins. Gil scored four goals 2021 and finished the season tied for the eighth most goal involvements with 22.
The MLS Player of the Month for June, the Spaniard also paced the league with 130 chances created, the highest total in the 11 seasons that Opta has tracked the statistic. In total, he contributed to 10 game-winning goals – assisting eight to tie a league record, with two winning tallies of his own.
Since signing with New England in 2019, Gil leads MLS with 47 assists in the regular season and playoffs and ranks third in league history with 0.53 assists per 90 minutes. His 42 regular season assists rank fourth in Revolution history while his 14 game-winning assists are the third most all-time for New England. Across the regular season and playoffs, New England is 25-1-10 when Gil registers an assist.
So far in 2022, Gil has continued to lead the league in several attacking categories, including assists (T-1st, 8), chances created (1st, 61), goal creating actions (T-1st, 11), shot creating actions (1st, 105), and successful crosses (1st, 51). The midfielder is also tied for fourth with 12 combined goals and assists this season.
The Revolution return to MLS action this Sunday, July 3, hosting FC Cincinnati at Gillette Stadium. The match kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and airs locally on WSBK-TV38, myRITV (Rhode Island), 98.5 FM The Sports Hub, and in Portuguese on WBIX 1260 AM Nossa Radio.
